Blah blah

The sad thing is, my Dad, a retired full bird Colonel in the USAF who was in Viet Nam, was born on September, 11. Now he doesn't want to celebrate his birthday anymore.

I've asked him, on my wife's suggestion, to have a half-year birthday on March 11. Maybe he'll go for that.

In any case, I started looking at 9/11 in history, and thought some people might be interested in the other things that have happened on that day. So here it is.

I started looking at 9/11 in history

Very long list for sure. However, do you realize that you can assemble a similar list for each and every day of the year?

Every single day, something special happens somewhere in the world. It is a great a effort to collect them as you did, but it is a phenomenon that belongs to every day of the year.

Happy birth day to your Dad and hope he doesnt let the connection spoil it.
on Sep 07, 2007
Wait.

Are you saying stuff happens on days other than September 11th? Preposterous. o.0

I didn't collect the list, I googled it after realizing it was time for me to get Dad a birthday present and thinking about how he felt. He had been out of town, but kind of out of town twice. He and my step-mother went to stay in New Hampshire for a while, and then he went on Safari and several other places, and so I had sent an email inquiring if he was back, and if so, where was he back to? New Hampshire or his home? so I'd know where to send something. To try and talk him out of his disassociation with his own natal celebration, I googled this list to use something random off of it for levity.

Charlie Brown (my Dad) wrote:
We will be here in NH until mid-Oct or later.

I wrote:
Cool...I dunno what we're sending, but we're sending something and it will probably be late, because that's how we roll...hahaha. It's your birthday, buddy, and despite whacky events that occur on it, it's still my dad's birthday!! After all, in 1988 Betsy King won the LPGA Cellular One-Ping Golf Championship on 9/11, so the day is NOT a total loss. o.0

Ok...not the best example.

Listen...MY DAD was born on that day. I love him, and that makes it a good day for me.

With 9/11 around the corner, I thought others might be interested in seeing what else happened on that day. Some of us find 9/11 to be more significant than, say, 9/12 when in 2005 the Hong Kong Disneyland opened.

September 11, 1944 U.S. 5th pantzer division is 1st to enter nazi-Germany

The US had Pantzer (or Panzer) divisions? Patton is rolling over in his grave.

TA is probably one of the most condescending bloggers on these forums, seemingly operating from the assumption that the rest of us are bloomin' idjits and must have every little obvious thing explained to us like children.

That's ok. This is the second time I've seen that name on my own blog and both times I thought ThinkSilent would be a better name and good advice to boot, but I ain't hatin'.

Maybe he'll come back by and tell us something magical like that our noses are for breathing, smelling, AND tasting. Did you know that Sabrina?

beginning with the death of my brother only 7 weeks later, on 11/07/01.

Gah. Being an only child, and having always wished I wasn't, I feel that one :/ Tell ya what. I'll be your brother (always wanted a sister to torment)

The US had Pantzer (or Panzer) divisions?

Haha...I actually had to do a "Find" to *cough* find that...well yeah. I'll leave it as is, though, since it's a cut and paste

My son was born on September 11th, 1994.

I was at work on 9/11, 2001.  My neighbor across the street rescued my kids from the school bus and kept them there until I made it through the 2 hour long wait to come through the gate onto base (that's what ThreatCon Delta will do for ya - this was back before they changed it to Force Protection Level).  Luckily my car had great A/C and the ice-cream cake I'd got from DQ for Davey's birthday wasn't melted.  Anyway, I picked the kids up and as we were walking across the street, my newly-7-year-old said 'Nobody is ever gonna be happy on my birthday again, are they mom?'

I had a hard time smiling as I told him that I'd always be happy on his birthday.

He's turning 13 in a couple of days, and I think he's forgotten what he said to me back then.  And, whilst there is still an air of sobriety to the day, I think that the atmosphere is a darn sight lighter than what it was on 9/11 2002 or 2003.

Time heals all wounds, but she also wounds all heels.

Well Happy Birthday to him, Dharma! Tough day to be born on - I hope he has a great birthday.

Sort of puts things in perspective...makes me realize how small a part we play in history. It also helps me realize that every day is special. Thanks for sharing.
