Finale sux
Published on June 7, 2008 By OckhamsRazor In Misc

I don't even have the patience now to find the right category for this, so it goes in misc.  Tough.

Dear reader, this a full on cathartic rant.  You're not likely going to understand what the hell I'm talking about, but it's either this or I start breaking shit.  And since I don't have any shit to break at the moment, the point is moot.  Welcome!  Welcome to my blog!

I'm a musician.  And on occasion, I have to write music.  Yeah - I know most musicians can't spell their own names with a crayon these days, much less write music, but hey - that makes me special.  At some point in time, some computer genius decided it would be cool to have software where you could write music and have it print out all nice and pretty.  Like all similar softeware niche situations, several companies vied for control of this, admittedly tiny, market.  At this time, the two big contenders are Finale and Sibelius.  I use the latter.  I've used the latter for years now, because Finale sux the balls of a retarded donkey in terms of intuitiveness.  Here comes the punch line.

I'm about to go back to the Armed Forces School of Music, and guess what?  The military uses the crappy product in all of its coursework.  Big surprise.  So I've been trying desperately to find a way to use Sibelius and convert it into Finale format only to find out I have to drop another 130 bucks on a plugin that will do the trick.  Only - there's no guarantee that it will totally do the trick.  That means that after the conversion, if I were to buy this shit that I shouldn't have to buy in the first place, I might still have a lot of tweaking to do to make the final product acceptable for my classwork.

GODDAMMIT!!

When are these companies going to realize that making their shit proprietary only pisses off the consumers.  I OWN both softwares, but I can't get them to talk to one another.  (Oh, my preferred software, Sibelius, reads Finale files just fine.  Of course it does, it fucking rocks.  Finale sux.)

Pissed.  Way pissed.

Hey!  Thanks for stopping by!  Here's some butterflies and flowers for you if this rant was too vehement.

The Hubble wants to send a message, too . . . you suck so bad, Finale, even the stars be flippin' you off.

(I've had cursory experience with both, and I preferred Sibelius as well. But then, my career doesn't hinge on it.)

Ok, the photoshop clouds, I see the message, but SC, you're gonna have to explain the Hubble one to me.  I'm experiencing a senior moment with that one.

Thanks for indulging my rant!

Look to the left side. it's not even photoshopped. Sure, it's not as obvious as Roy's, but still . . . it's not photoshopped.

Instead, I give you pissed-off Jesus, raising his arms to the heaven in frustration on your behalf, Ock:

I want for my front yard!

Nothing better than getting the Jesus statue in on some good ol' fashioned homoerotic music from the seventies!

Okay, I'm done farking up your thread with pictures. For now.

Eh, I don't write any music down, I just improvise. It all sucks, sure, but at least I don't have to bother with either.

I use Anvil Studio for musical notation (no, I don't think it prints sheet music. No, I don't care).

Can Finale read .mid? If so, you should be able to save it that way from Sibellius.

Look to the left side.

Ha, ok I see it now

Can Finale read .mid? If so, you should be able to save it that way from Sibellius.

Yeah - everything reads .mid, but .mid doesn't contain a TON of elements that are needed in printed music (slurs, accents, expressions, etc...) so I suppose I could write a 20 instrument score with none of those things in it yet, save to mid, read it into Finale, and then add those elements, but it seems almost easier to just learn Finale at that point.

Thankfully, most of the musicians I work with don't sight read so I don't have to worry about writing anything out for them.  But now I know, I won't be going anywhere near Finale.  Thanks for the warning.

SC, you're gonna have to explain the Hubble one to me

Phew, I'm glad I wasn't the only one missing it.

"Speaking" music lingo is above my head but I do understand the frustrations and feel your pain!  Ranting is good, gets the dregs of breaking things off the surface!

my dear musician nazi, if it's any consolation, we have finale and you are welcome to use it. does the fact that we have that program mean we suck?

For some reason I thought Stardock was involved with Finale.  Turns out I was thinking of Fanfare!
